Understanding nutrition is challenging.

Information on nutrition is constantly changing. Nutrition is a controversial topic. Experts disagree about some nutrition information. Deciding what is a healthy diet can be confusing and frustrating. Fads and trends come and go. Often nutrition advice is profit driven. There are many news reports, books, and internet sites about food, health, and nutrition. Nutrition studies often claim that a specific food or diet will cause or prevent a certain disease, but use inaccurate methodology, may have bias, and lack sufficient scientific validity. There is still much we have to learn about nutrition and the influence of diet on health. Diet and health is complicated because humans have many differences including different genetic backgrounds and lifestyles. Research on nutrition is complex due to many factors including people's health, genetics, and actions. Different people need different amounts of nutrients based on gender, age, health issues, and body weight.

Choosing what to eat is complicated.

Our food choices are influenced by scientific and medical information and cultural, economic, and social factors. Look for information gathered from nutrition research published in peer-reviewed scientific articles to understand the connections between food and health. We often share food or eat with family and friends.  Encourage healthy eating together. To eat healthy on a budget, plan meals in advance, plan your meals around what is on sale, buy in bulk, choose inexpensive healthy food like beans, use fresh produce in season when prices are usually lower, use frozen or canned vegetables and fruits, use store brand and generic versions of food, cook ahead and freeze meals, or prepare extra and save leftovers.
